The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will tighten oversight of
airline safety after aircraft groundings at big carriers, but will not absolve
airlines of responsibility for monitoring "I do not want the FAA to be the quality
control unit for each airline," Robert Sturgell, acting FAA
administrator, told a Senate appropriations subcommittee.

On Monday, the European Union cleared the way for air travelers to use mobile phones to talk, text or send e-mails on planes throughout Europe's airspace. With the EU approval, airlines will now be able to offer onboard service for cell phones that use the European GSM technology later this year.

Great Britain's airline regulator has announced higher fees will be charged to travelers using London's two biggest airports. The Civil Aviation Authority said higher fees, effective April 1, are needed to pay for improvements at Heathrow and Gatwick airports, and for increased security.

American Airlines canceled 1,094 flights, or nearly half its schedule, on Wednesday to re-inspect aircraft, a disruption that affected about 100,000 passengers and triggered chaos at the busiest US airports. The airline said it expects more than 900 cancellations on Thursday.
