On June 12, 2008, Continental Airlines released its plans for capacity reduction beginning at the end of the summer travel peak season in September of this year.
Hub capacity reduction will result in 11% decline of domestic mainline capacity from last year and a 6-point-4% decline on mainline plus regional capacity from last year.
Several flights will be reduced out of some of their hubs. On September 3, Continental will be reducing the frequencies and will also discontinue services between it's hubs and several major airports. As a result of the reduction and discontinued services, several stations will be closed including Sarasota, FL; Reno, NV; Palm Springs, CA; Oakland, CA and Green Bay, WI, just to name a few.
Continental is eliminating 3,000 positions. They are offering a volunteer program, which is where these cuts are expected to begin. The amount of employees to be cut after the volunteer program will not be known until sometime in August.
For those passengers who have already booked a flight on or after September 3rd that are affected by these capacity reductions can expect to be contacted by Continental Airlines to make other arrangements.
