Turks And Caicos.
On August 1, 2008, Spirit Airlines will suspend service to Islip/Long Island
McArthur Airport (airport code ISP) from Fort Lauderdale.
On that same day,
Spirit will also drop air service to the Caribbean island of Providenciales in
Turks and Caicos (airport code PLS).
Effective September 2, 2008, Spirit will be offering service to Grand Cayman
and Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) only on a seasonal basis. To help cut fuel
costs, Spirit also plans to retire five Airbus A319 aircraft in September.
Spirit has added new destinations to their Caribbean, Latin America and South
America route system. In May, Spirit added new service to Cartagena, Colombia;
in June, they began service to Trinidad; and coming in late July they will add
new service to Bogota, Colombia. Spirit has also applied with the Department of
Transportation for permission to fly to Manaus, Brazil (airport code MAO).
Spirit has tried in recent months to combat rising fuel costs by adding fees
for seat assignments, charging $3 for soft drinks and adding fees for first and
second checked bags.
