Xanterra South Rim, operator of lodges and other services in Grand Canyon National Park, and the Grand Canyon Field Institute will offer a "Learning & Lodging" program this year.
The program combines in-field adventures with
naturalist guides from the non-profit Institute, comfortable accommodations in
park lodges, some meals and gift shop coupons. A non-profit organization, the
GCFI is dedicated to enhancing the understanding and enjoyment of the Grand
Canyon through firsthand experience. The GCFI supports the National Park Service
by helping to meet the educational and recreational needs of park visitors. The
Field Institute's course offerings and expert instruction have complemented the
park's ranger-led interpretive and educational programming since 1993.
The "Learning & Lodging Adventure"
program focuses on the formation of the canyon as well as its unique human
history. The two-day, two-night program features accommodations at Yavapai Lodge
or Maswik Lodge (subject to seasonal operations and availability), in-park
transportation, one dinner, two breakfasts, two box lunches, a guide each day,
instructional materials, retail coupons and a course completion certificate.
Group size is limited to 12. Children 10 and older are welcome to participate
when accompanied by an adult. Programs are offered beginning on Friday or Sunday
nights.
Upon arrival, participants check into their lodge
and attend a short orientation with a GCFI representative. The next morning,
under the leadership of a guide/naturalist from the Institute, the group heads
out for a day of hiking and exploring along and below the South Rim with an
emphasis on the park's geology and ecology. On the second day you will venture
to points along the rim to various overlooks, with discussions on the canyon's
human history and geology.
"Learning & Lodging Adventure" is
available for single or double occupancy.
From now through March 3, 2009 the rates are $362.90 for one adult
and $608.36 for two adults. The rate is $205.46 throughout the year for children
between 10 and 16, and $265.54 for additional adults in the same room. All rates
include taxes.
