Delta Airlines announced today that effective August 4, 2008, If a customer wants to check two bags it will cost them a whopping $50 extra. This new fee applies to all new tickets that are purchased beginning July 31, 2008. Delta Airlines currently charges $25 for the 2nd bag.

Please Note: If you booked your ticket on Delta Airlines prior to July 31, 2008, and are traveling after August 3, 2008, you are grandfathered, under your Delta Airlines Contract Of Carriage, to pay only $25 for the 2nd bag. It should also be noted that Delta Airlines does not charge for a first checked bag. Airlines that do charge for a first checked bag of $15 are American Airlines, United Airlines, Northwest Airlines, US Airways and Spirit Airlines. Every other U.S. airline charges for a 2nd bag. Only Southwest Airlines permits two checked bags for free.

As of today, all airlines except for Southwest Airlines charges $25 for the 2nd bag. Air Tran Airways, Frontier Airlines, Jet Blue Airways and Midwest Airlines charge $20 for the second checked bag. Another point of interest is that Continental Airlines stated last week that since they have imposed the $25 fee for a 2nd bag, they have seen a 60% drop in 2nd checked bags.
